One of the most time-consuming parts of any NSPB implementation happens before a single form is configured in the system.
It's the design conversation. The back-and-forth between consultant and client about what the form should look like — which accounts go on the rows, which dimensions go on the columns, what calculation logic drives the totals, what the layout should feel like for the finance team that will be entering data into it every month.
That conversation used to happen on whiteboards, in PowerPoint slides, in Excel mockups that took longer to build than the form itself, and in design documents that described what would be built without actually showing it. The client would nod, the consultant would build, and the first time anyone saw the real form was in UAT — often too late to make meaningful changes without impacting the project timeline.

What It Is
The Module Design Generator is a five-step form design tool built into the NSPBfy Implementation Toolkit. It lets you design an NSPB form — define its structure, configure its rows and columns, write its calculation logic, and generate a fully interactive HTML preview — without touching the NSPB system at all.
The preview looks and behaves like a real NSPB form. Editable cells, calculation rows that respond to input, totals that roll up correctly. A client can open the HTML file in any browser, enter numbers, and see the form behave — before the consultant has spent a single hour in Calculation Manager.
How It Works — The Five Steps
Step 1 — Upload. Start by uploading an existing design document or spreadsheet — your current form design template, an account mapping, or even a prior engagement's design artifact. The tool reads it and uses it as the starting foundation so you're not designing from a blank page.
Step 2 — Select Tab. Choose which module or form type you're designing. The tool supports multiple form types within a single design session — OpEx, Revenue, Workforce, CapEx — each with their own configuration.
Step 3 — Configure. This is the core design step. Define your row structure — account members, subtotals, calculation rows, blank spacers. Define your column structure — periods, versions, comparison columns. Tag each row as an input row, a calculated row, or a total row. This is where the form's skeleton takes shape.
Step 4 — Action Plan. Review a generated summary of what the form requires — which business rules need to be built, which account members need to exist in the dimension, which security considerations apply based on the form's structure. The action plan is the bridge between the design and the build — a consultant-ready checklist of what needs to happen in NSPB before the form can go live.
Step 5 — Interactive Form Preview. The generator produces a fully interactive HTML preview of the designed form. Input cells accept numbers. Calculation rows — marked with a pencil icon — open a formula editor where you can define and edit the row's calculation logic in plain terms. Total rows roll up automatically based on the structure defined in Step 3. Export the preview to a standalone HTML file you can share with the client, embed in a design document, or use as a handover artifact at the end of the design phase.
The Formula Editor
The pencil button on calculation and total rows opens the Formula Editor modal — a dedicated interface for defining what that row should calculate. Write the logic in plain terms, reference other rows by their defined IDs, and see the formula validated before it's saved to the spec.
This is the part that matters most for consultant-client alignment. Instead of describing a calculation in a Word document — "this row is the sum of rows 14 through 22, minus row 8" — you show it, live, in the preview. The client sees the number change when they enter data in the referenced rows. The logic is visible, testable, and agreed before anyone touches Calculation Manager.
The HTML Export
When the design is complete, the Module Design Generator exports a standalone HTML file — a self-contained interactive preview of the form, no internet connection required, openable in any browser on any device.
This file is the artifact that changes the design conversation.
Send it to the client before the design review meeting. They open it, enter some numbers, see whether the layout makes sense, and arrive at the meeting with specific, informed feedback rather than abstract impressions. The meeting becomes a refinement session instead of a reveal.
Keep it in the project folder as a version-controlled design record. When a stakeholder asks six months post-go-live why a calculation works the way it does, the HTML preview is the answer — showing the agreed design at the time it was approved.
Why This Matters for NSPB Implementations
NSPB form design is where requirements get lost.
A client describes what they want. A consultant interprets that description and builds something. The gap between the description and the interpretation only becomes visible in UAT — at which point changes are expensive, timelines are tight, and the client's confidence in the process has taken a hit.
The Module Design Generator closes that gap by making the design tangible before the build starts. Not a wireframe. Not a description. An actual interactive form the client can use to validate that what they asked for is what they're going to get.
For consultants, it reduces rework. For clients, it reduces UAT surprises. For the project as a whole, it moves the design conversation from a phase that's easy to rush through to one that actually produces a signed-off artifact the build can be held to.
